Forstner. Say it again. Forstner. Rolls right off the
tongue, doesn't it? But what the heck is it?
A
Forstner drill bit is designed to cut holes in wood, but is a vast
improvement over typical hole saws or spade-type boring bits. The
design of the cutting surfaces gives the woodworker important
advantages.
First, it produces a flat-bottomed hole with a smooth
top cut and smooth sides. Forstner bits also have less tendency to
jump around and damage your work (especially when working without a
guide).
Also, Forstner bits do not absolutely require any wood in the center of
the bit for it to work properly, as both hole saws and spade bits do.
This design feature makes it easy to slightly enlarge or reposition existing holes
without having to fill the old hole first. You can also, within
limits, begin a hole with the bit on a slight angle... impossible with
other hole cutters. (Of course, these
specialty cuts should be made slowly till the bit has sunken into the
wood. Using a guide will always result in a more accurate result.)
