The Lost Art of Steam Heating
by Dan Holohan
This is a classic book for those who live in homes with steam heat and those who struggle to make these difficult systems work! Unlike many other books in this area, Dan mixes a pleasant blend of down-home humor with the deep wisdom of the folks he refers to as the "dead men"... the trailblazers in the field of steam heating that, mostly through trial and error, managed to both design and build seemingly simple heating systems that are anything but.
Living with steam heat is not for the meek or the easily frightened. There are so many things that can go wrong and many of them are hidden in the minutia of design, the dynamics of the movement of steam and inside very old pipes! But a well designed steam heating system can be both satisfying and remarkably efficient, considering the few moving parts and its seeming simplicity.
But a system that is older, where changes have been made by plumbers who didn't quite know what they were doing, or in a home that has settled considerably over the years... let me just say simply that "mysterious" things happen. Dan, with his vast experience, tries to address all the most important issues, not in a cookbook fashion, but by leading you on a voyage of learning so you can first understand your system and then (and only then) try to figure out what needs to be done.
All in all, this is an enjoyable and educational book for those of us who live with steam heat, and those of us who are glad they don't!
